Jerry Bergonzi Quartet
|
Acclaimed American saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi will travel from Boston to the Market Hall for a
performance with Brian Dickinson on piano, Mike Downes on bass, and Ted Warren on drums.
Bergonzi first gained world-wide recognition while performing with Dave Brubeck’s
‘‘Two Generations of Brubeck” (1973-75) and subsequently in Brubeck’s Quartet (1979-81).
Bergonzi tours extensively in the U.S. and Europe, and has put out over 30 recordings as a band leader.
Among over 100 sideman CD appearances are five with Brubeck, Joey Calderazzo,
Miles & Quincy at Montreux, Hal Galper, George Gruntz and Bruce Gertz.
“This guy is the real tower of power… his bold penetrating tone and furiously paced
streams of notes make for a commanding voice indeed. His passionate improvisations are marked
by a consistency of strength in every register.”
“As long as Jerry Bergonzi is around, no tenor player can rest on his laurels.”
Gene Dinovi “Generations” Trio

Gene Dinovi “Generations” Trio
|
Three generations of fine jazz musicians will be on stage as veteran American expatriate pianist
Gene Dinovi is joined by Neil Swainson on bass and guitarist Andrew Scott.
The first set will be an unpredictable tour of Dinovi’s remarkably accomplished musical life with lively
anecdotes and a couple of vocals. The second set of music will consist of a one hour trip down the musical road
of Ellington/Strayhorn and Gershwin.
“Generations” captures the spirit and sound of the original bebop scene (of which DiNovi was a charter member),
drawing on the pianist’s vast experiences as a sideman for Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman,
Artie Shaw, Lester Young, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Carmen McCrae, Zoot Sims and Stan Getz.
Familiar bassist Neil Swainson continues his 19-year stint as accompanist of U.K. piano legend George Shearing
and a host of others. Young guitarist Andrew Scott has released 2 CDs as leader, one with U.S. tenor star
Harry Allen and a second with Randy Sandke and Mike Murley.

Emilie-Claire Barlow Sextet
|
Just back from France and a triumphant performance at Jazz a Juan, and with her just-out 7th CD
The VeryThought of You climbing the jazz charts, singer Emilie-Claire Barlow’s career is moving into a higher gear.
A prior release, Like a Lover, continues to sit in the Top 30 Jazz Albums on HMV Japan since being
released there in September 2006. Audiences are charged by Barlow’s energetic, confident performances,
her natural demeanor, and wit. She has been nominated for one Juno award and twice (2005 and 2006) as
Vocalist of the Year at the National Jazz Awards. She will appear in Peterborough with her sextet,
likely including some familiar players (guitarist Reg Schwager), and new faces such as pianist
Nancy Walker and tenor saxophonist Kelly Jefferson.
“The next big thing in jazz.”
“It’s very, very, good. The best jazz vocal disc in a long time.”

The Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet

The Davidson/Murley/Braid Quintet
|
This all-star aggregation features multiple Juno Award winners Mike Murley (tenor and soprano sax)
and David Braid (piano) along with the great emerging talent of alto/soprano sax player Tara Davidson.
Bassist Jim Vivian and New York drummer Ian Froman complete the quintet. The group grew out of the Murley/Braid Quartet
(2007 National Jazz Award winner as Acoustic Jazz Group of the Year) and Tara Davidson’s own quartet,
which featured Braid. Because all of the musicians have played together in many settings before,
expect to be treated to duo, trio, and quartet offerings during the evening. The DMBQ represents world-class
improvisation with lyrical grace, contemporary harmony, and rhythmic vitality.
Mike Murley, a long-time KJS favourite, regularly wins individual honours as Canadian jazz saxophonist of the year.
In the last several years, Braid’s great composing and performing talent has been on display here with his
own sextet and trio and last year’s standout performance with Phil Nimmons and Matt Brubeck.
“It’s exhilarating to hear such playing. The quintet is a pristine combo full of creative talent and musical serendipity. They compel attention to every note, every nuance … it’s jazz heaven.”
- Halifax Chronicle-Herald, July 2007
“A genius to call our own.”
